It was really a headache when Li Wen wanted us to improve the design and make a wallpaper which is worth buying with a higher price. The first thing came to our mind was - no direction. But if we didn't change the design, the silkscreening process would be much harder for us. So... no choice, we needed to redesign.

The first sketch had not much idea and concept, it was just based on the theme communication.

Our group started to brainstorm, hoping to come up with a concept. We simply did some sketches on the spot, but it didn't help.

applied the border around letter (stripes) + antique phone (circle with numbers) + remained the original subject matter (typewriter) - FAIL

okay, we gotta think all over again. REFRESH!

Suet Yee suggested to narrow down the scope because communication itself was a very wide topic. Then we thought of the slogan for GIORDANO - world without strangers. Indeed, this slogan is trying to break the boundary among people, just like the saying "All for one, one for all." No one can stand on his own. In this world, we need to communicate and interact with people in order to survive. To be more personal, communication can happen between 2 strangers. If you would like to take the first step to know someone, you will need to break the wall.

The divide sign is a very simple visual to convey our idea. 2 people - you and me, with a wall in between, indicating strangers who do not know and talk to each other.

When you hope someone to know you what you are talking about, to understand what you are thinking, you do not really depend on communication device to convey your message. In fact, senses is the key to achieve it.

Mouth, to tell.
Eye, to see.
Ear, to hear.
Brain, to interpret.
Heart, to be sincere.

Also, we thought of using sticky notes as a part of our design. People use sticky notes as a reminder to make sure something to be done, or to tell someone about something. In a way this is a form of communication.

Then we combined this idea with a forum game. The game is very simple. The first person asks a question, another person has to answer it and ask another question. This game has actually no end unless no one answers the last question. Therefore, through this game, we can communicate and play without even knowing who the person is. Isn't this breaking the wall?

"Hello."

We did believe that "hello" is most probably the first word that we use to greet someone whom we know or we don't. It carries a feeling of being open-hearted to accept someone.

Finally, we combined all this together and here came our design.

Light Emitting Wallpaper by Jonas Sampson.

This is Most Excellent. Although the technology remains a bit unknown, Jonas Sampson has created Light Emitting Wallpaper. With this high-tech light-emitting wallpaper it's possible to use a two-dimentional flat surface as light source instead of a 3D object. As long as the wallpaper is turned ‘off’, it is indistinguishable as a source of light. Instead, it is just what it appears to be: wallpaper.

Is this retro or just the color?

i saw a lot of retro illustrations...
colors are like~ basically old, worn out, yellowish~ colors that look old
and i realize TOA students (illustration major) have a lot of artwork that "feels" retro~
at least on the colors they use~

This is the mind map done by my group members. The design is drawn by Suet Yee.

Here are my sketches based on childhood and games. Based on my research, Bingo is a type of Retro game which has been played since last time. I used lollipop to fill in the boxes on the Bingo to represent somewhere a distance is going to success means "Bingo".Moreover, colorful represent success is around us.

This piece is to represent childhood memory. When we was young, we use to play bubbles around with joy and happiness. I use lollipop to represent 7 colours which we can get from the bubbles when we blur it. I put the background as grey because it represent pass means memory but there are sometimes still in our unconcious .

This is my first sketch and it's based on the theme of communication. I'm trying to recall people's memory about the way of communication in the past. A few examples are applied in my design - typewriter, telegraph (dots), and letter (vertical stripes).

Communication is a process by which we assign and convey meaning in an attempt to create shared understanding. Languages of many kinds are being used in order to exchange information - It could be oral language which the parties should share in order to process the data in the proper way, there are also informal languages such as body language, which is much more universal.

In our days, when saying Communication we generally refer to the mass media - TV, radio, newspaper, magazines and of course the internet. Those media channels transfers mass amount of impersonal information to a mass amount of people consuming it. Usually it would be divided by common interests like sport, entertainment, etc.

To really think about it, what I mention above is only a minor section of what communication can do. Of course I can't list out all, but yes, you can get the answer by yourself by just looking around since communication is existing everywhere.

And recently I've come across this thing called 'graphic agitation', which is mainly related to the politic and social. I think it's quite an interesting way of communication (critical and letting voice out).

It has grown stronger over time since the 1960s (not sure whether it is up to now, but I don't think so). Individuals and bodies utilizes graphic art with different aims, usually the employing graphics are meant to spread their views ranging from governments through the terrorist organizations and include, among others, various pressure groups and commercial institutions. People can go really far in order to communicate their views to the public. That is why there is such a massive amount of graphics in political and social agitation out there.

Meaning:

A term used to describe and classify culturally outdated or aged trends, modes, or fashions, from the overall postmodern past, but since to become functionally the norm once on that time.

Origin:
The word "retro" derives from the Latin prefix retro, meaning "backwards" or "in past times" which particularly as seen in the words retrograde, implying a movement toward the past instead of a progress toward the future, and retrospective, referring to a nostalgic or critical eye toward the past.

Our group has done the mind map which contents house, chilhood, attract attention, cute stuff and fashions. After discussion, we will now start on our sketches mainly based on childhood. Childhood includes the games and memory. I have do some research based on memory. Memory contains lots of stuff which may includes bubble, lollipop, playing with melting candle wax and imaginary friends (toys) and more.

There are fews references that I researched on bubbles.
